My husband and I are moving to GA: I got a job at UGA, but my husband will most likely have to commute to Atlanta. We would love to live in Athens, but I don't want my husband to spend 3 hours + a day commuting. Is there are a nice safe town in between the two places?

Thank you for your 2 cents!

Jefferson, Winder, Auburn, North Gwinnett Co.

Commuting to Downtown ATL is going to be ughly no matter where you live. See if he can get flex time

Hopefully he will....

This town called Dacula seems to be right in the middle - is it worth checking out? Thanks!

You'll also want to consider Bogart & Watkinsville in Oconee County. They are convenient to GA Highway 316 which feeds into I-85 South. Prices out in Barrow & Oconee are more reasonable than in the "true suburbs" of Atlanta. These areas are bedroom communities for Athens & Atlanta.

Default hello

dacula is a nice area.its about 40 minutes to athens and about 30 to 60 minutes from atlanta. It is becoming pricey though. Jefferson is nice and still affordable and has some backroads into athens

Default Monroe or Loganville

I would suggest Loganville or Monroe, both in Walton Co. Oconee County has excellent schools.

This suggestion is not from experience but something off I 20 might be feasible. I've never driven that during rush hour. Unless you're prepared for the experience of driving in Atlanta rush hour traffic, please do alot of research before hand. My husband has made this excursion for 20 years and it has wasted alot of his time and energy. If at all possible, try to make the commute as reasonable as possible.

There is talk about a train from Athens to Atlanta, called the Brain Train. It sounds intriguing but there are alot of hurdles to jump first so that's years away.

Athens is a great town, as is Atlanta, with many in between.

Monroe is 20-25 minutes from Athens. It has a "real" downtown and is growing fast (recently got a Home Depot and Wal-Mart). Those I know that make the Atlanta commute spend over an hour each way in their cars. Many have done it for many, many years to make it possible to live in a small, family-friendly town.

Loganville is an extension of Snellville in Gwinnett Co. Loganville was rural but when Snellville boomed in about 1999-2003, many residents moved further out to Loganville.

Again, I'd consider something closer to I 20. Good luck!

Default Watkinsville

Watkinsville, in my opinion, is an ideal town in which to live.

Watkinsville seems so expensive compared to the other towns outside of Athens. For those who live there, is it worth it? Is there any diversity there?

I would (check it out). I have a friend who lives in Dacula, and other than the drive (which is bad for most everyone in this area), he and his family like it just fine.
